On March 29, 2008, Austin in Connection will offer a day-long retreat for helping professionals, caregivers, and educators at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Our intention is to create sanctuary for all who attend so we may experience how contemplative practice can alleviate suffering and enrich the lives of those who serve others. The day will bring opportunities for both soothing and energizing our minds and bodies through gentle meditation and movement, the power of poetry, and understanding the links between cutting-edge research in neural integration and the ancient practice of mindfulness. The venerated monk Khen Rinpoche Geshe Tsetan will offer a Tibetan Buddhist perspective on compassion and mindfulness according to the Gelukpa lineage, the lineage of the Dalai Lama.
Khen Rinpoche is the Khenchen, or head abbot, of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery-in-exile. The original monastery was built in 1447 in Shigatse, Tibet as the home monastery of the first Dalai Lama and the historical seat of the Panchen Lama. In the aftermath of the Chinese genocide of Tibet and due to continued political tensions, the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was re-established by the Dalai Lama in the Tibetan refugee settlement of Bylakuppe in southern India to provide a safe container for the preservation of the tradition and its teachings. All proceeds will be donated to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in support of its restoration.
